Program Note
There are no dangerous spiders in the Seattle area, where I grew up. But that didn’t stop me from being terrified of them as a child, especially the giant house spiders and wolf spiders who would occasionally show up in bathtubs and under beds at sizes of 3-4 inches in diameter. Arachnophobia explores feelings of alarm, jitters, and revulsion with disjunct leaps; active staccato notes; unpredictable, changing meters; and shuddering tremolos. Arachnophobia was written for and premiered by Giovanna Gioscia for New Music Mosaic's Timbre Volume 3 in November 2023.
