Ping Pong Commissioning consortium

About the piecePing Pong is a 5-minute, up-tempo, rhythmic duet for oboe and bassoon or clarinet & bassoon. Commissioners will receive both versions of the piece. The two performers will interact in a dynamic, surprising, conversational manner to bring a game of one-on-one ping pong to life. The music will illustrate the tapping paddles and bouncing balls of the game, including various stroke maneuvers such as offensive hits, loops, flips, and smashes, defenses chops, blocks and lobs, and the quality of the ball movement such as backspin, topspin and corkspin. Ping Pong will primarily use standard techniques with a handful of creative extended techniques including: double trills, multiphonics and bisbigliando This piece serves to broaden the repertoire of quality, imaginative reed duets by women and to introduce performers and audiences to extended techniques in an engaging and approachable way.

About the composer
Dr. Lisa Neher (she/her, “NEER”) is an award-winning composer and new music mezzo on a mission to transform audiences through sound, story, and vulnerability. With a voice praised as “full and rich” and “especially alive” (Oregon ArtsWatch), Neher’s performance credits include Third Angle New Music, Really Spicy Opera, Portland Columbia Symphony Orchestra, Opera Theatre Oregon, New Music Gathering, Resonance Ensemble, Experiments in Opera, Renegade Opera, and Big Mouth Society. She is a member of Portland Opera Chorus.
Described as a “supremely talented,” “visionary composer” (Willamette Week), “maestro of beautifully wacky noises” (Oregon ArtsWatch) and author of “liquid, impressionist piano writing and fluent melding” of voices (New York Classical Review), Neher’s compositions are inspired by the climate crisis, the tender love of family and friends, and the eerie mystery of deep ocean life. She is Composer in Residence for the Beaverton Community Band. She has been commissioned and performed by the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Cincinnati Song Initiative, Third Angle New Music, FearNoMusic, Dinosaur Annex, New Opera West, Mirror Visions Ensemble, Alma Ensemble, Opera Elect, and Opera Santa Barbara, among others. About the Lead COmmissioners: Reed Minders Duo
The Reed Minders Duo is comprised of husband-and-wife team Dr. Margaret P. Fay (bassoon) and Dr. Graham Mackenzie (oboe). They have been performing as a duo since 2006 and are known for presenting dynamic, engaging, and innovative concerts in concert halls, universities, churches, and elementary schools across the United States and Canada. Most recently, they performed at West Virginia University, Penn State University, and Indiana University, and they have also presented together at conferences of the International Double Reed Society, National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, Ohio Music Education Association, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, and Texas Music Educators Association.

A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Dr. Margaret P. Fay is Assistant Teaching Professor of Bassoon at Penn State University. Before joining the faculty at Penn State, Margaret taught at Stephen F. Austin State University, Western University in London, Ontario, and the University
of Guelph. Margaret holds a Doctor of Music in Bassoon Performance from Indiana University and master's degrees in both bassoon performance (Ithaca College) and music theory (University of British Columbia). Margaret has conducted guest master classes at the Ohio State University, West Virginia University, Western University, the University of Victoria, and Kenyon College, and was the guest bassoon artist at Georgia State University's Double Reed Day in September 2023. A composer herself, Margaret has had two of her compositions performed at International Double Reed Society conferences. When Margaret's arms get tired from all her bassoon practicing, she switches to her tenoroon, a.k.a mini bassoon, for a while.
Dr. Graham Mackenzie is principal oboist of the London Symphonia, Niagara Symphony, and Windsor Symphony. He has been a member of the Tanglewood Music Centre, Music Academy of the West, National Repertory Orchestra, and Civic Orchestra of Chicago. A frequent concerto
soloist, he has performed concertos by Bach, Marcello, Martinů, Mozart, Strauss, Vaughan-Williams, and Vivaldi. A passionate teacher, he has served as oboe instructor at Stephen F. Austin State University and Wilfrid Laurier University. Graham holds a Doctor of Music from Indiana University, studying with Linda Strommen and Roger Roe. He also has a Master of Music from DePaul University, studying with Eugene Izotov, and a Bachelor of Music from Wilfrid Laurier University, studying with James Mason and Richard Dorsey.
When The Reed Minders aren't playing their instruments or making reeds, they enjoy fierce ping pong matches, board games, and spending time with their seven-year-old son, who enjoys playing the piano and all sports.
