Program Note
eddy was inspired by circular movements of water: the swirling along the edges of a stream, the tiny whirlpools created by canoe paddles, and the churning of the cold water of the ocean depths up to the surface, carrying nutrients to the ecosystems in the shallows. The piece paints a picture of these currents with spiraling melodic motives and long arpeggiated lines that take advantage of the full compass of the harp. The resonant, metallic, lower strings represent the deep water of the ocean while the upper register’s crisp, sparkling sound evokes the surface of the ocean and the miniature eddies of smaller ponds and streams.
