Program NoteI'll admit it: I was one of those west coast folks who got Iowa and Ohio mixed up. But then I moved to Iowa for graduate school, and literally everything in my life life changed. I made lifelong friends, hiked in the beautiful state parks, got to know the local running community, fell in love, and landed some of my first major composing, singing, and teaching gigs. I got to take in the enormous blue skies as I drove from small town to small town, to experience the crunch of crisp fall leaves that I used to think were fantasies from children's books (fall leaves are rather soggy in Seattle), get to know what a true deep freeze of winter really can be. And of course, I enjoyed the summer farmer's markets with their bins of fresh produce and the smell of fair food wafting in the air. Postcards from Iowa was commissioned by Kirkwood Community College Chamber Singers and Dr. Fred Kiser, Director. Nicki Neiderhiser's evocative haiku captured the love I feel for my second home state.
