ScoreProgram NoteLook Within is inspired by Ripples of Your Soul, a new abstract painting by Portland artist Paulette Insall. On her website, Insall writes, “I create art that transports you to a place of hope, joy, renewal, and rest…that gives you space for reflection in this noisy and chaotic world. I see beauty as an invitation to connect with that which is bigger than ourselves…a way to experience a sense of the eternal, the source of all that is good and beautiful.”
Look Within explores contemplation through slowly moving chords that move between open spacing and close clusters. Contrasting sections featuring pulsing ostinatos and ascending melodic lines express inner struggles, striving, and hope. I was inspired by Insall’s contrast of rich, dark blues with bright whites, turquoises, and purples to highlight the low register of the cello and the high register of the violins. Repeated alternating figures represent the swirls and swishes in her painting. The work invites listeners to enter into a space of reflection through visual and sonic art, and see what lies within.
