Program NoteThe Ghost of the Wych Elm is a mysteriously haunting song about a ghost who doesn't remember who she is. The vocal part is lyrical and aching while the piano plays light spooky staccati and creepy trills.

TextThe Ghost of the Wych Elm
Have you met the ghost of the wych elm? She’s been there for oh such a long time, wearing rags and a ring and a single shoe, and she asks if you know who she is. Have you met the ghost of the wych elm? She walks out in the woods some nights, looking all around for her hand and her name! And she asks if you know who she is. Have you met the ghost of the wych elm? Was she a spy or a witch or a singer? Her skeleton bones have all disappeared. Do you know who she is? Who is the ghost of the wych elm? Wych Elm: (pronounced the same as "witch"), also called the Scotch or Scots elm, a large deciduous tree native to the British Isles. Wych comes from Old English Wice, meaning pliant or supple. |
