Near the end of opera, the Boy's beloved toy, the Velveteen Rabbit, lies on a pile of refuse, waiting to be burned. He has been discarded because he was exposed to scarlet fever germs when the Boy was sick. Forlorn and abandoned, the Rabbit wonders what was the point of the love he shared with the Boy if it all ends like this? Emerging from a flower, the Christmas Magic Fairy appears and tells the Velveteen Rabbit that she is here to make him Real, not just to the Boy, but to everyone.

I am the Christmas Magic Fairy.
I take care of all the playthings
that the children have loved.
