Program Note
This piece is inspired by the Palouse (“puh-LOOS”), a unique landscape of rolling, fertile hills in southeast Washington state. These hills, known as loess (“LOH-es”), are created by wind-blown dust and silt, which blew in from the southwest, forming hills shaped like giant sand dunes. In modern times, they are covered by wheat fields. The music captures the rolling shapes of the land under wide open skies. Palouse was commissioned by Albert and Sarah Miller as a trio for trombone, euphonium, and in piano in 2020 and released on Sarah Miller's album WAIL! in 2023. Both are on faculty at Washington State University in Pullman near the Palouse. I created this version for oboe, horn, and piano in 2023 for Iowa Composers Forum and Luna Nova Ensemble, who premiered the work in September 2023 with Michelle Vigneau, oboe, Robert Patterson, horn, and Perry Mears, piano
